The US Women soccer team, world champion for the 4th time in France!
Sunday July 7th in Lyon, the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ set the defending champions, USA, against the impressive young Netherlands team. After a scoreless first half, the Americans broke the stalemate on a penalty kick buried by the star of the team, Megan Rapinoe (1-0). Then only 7 minutes later, Rose Lavelle added another goal after a long run and strong strike just inside the right post. The Dutch couldn’t manage to crack the American defense and the USA won their fourth World Cup and second in a row! It was definitely a game of stars as USA’s Megan Rapinoe won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot, Alex Morgan took the Silver Boot, and Rose Lavelle earned the Bronze Ball, while the Netherlands’ Sari van Veenendaal won the Golden Glove award.
The road to the top…
The USA had a difficult knockout stage, beating Spain (2-1), the host country France (2-1) and England (2-1). They scored a record of 26 goals during the competition and broke the record for the most goals in a match (13-0 vs Thailand).
