Eliud Kipchoge breaks the 2 hour marathon barrier wearing Pebax Powered® shoes

Nike's Vaporfly shoes are under the spotlight after Kenyan athlete, Eliud Kipchoge, broke the two hour marathon barrier in Vienna.

The Athlete:

Described as "the greatest marathoner of the modern era," Eliud Kipchoge (34) is a long-distance runner who has competed in 13 different marathon events and won 12 of them. In 2016, he won the gold medal during the Olympic Marathon in Rio de Janeiro with a time of 2:08:44.

Two years later during the Berlin marathon, Eliud streched his limits with a new time of 2:01:39, breaking the previous world record by 1 minute and 18 seconds (Dennis Kimetto in 2014).

Earlier this year, Eliud won the London Marathon with a time of 2:02:37, nearly one minute slower than his world record in Berlin, but still the second fastest marathon of all time!

The Challenge:

A few days after his win of the London Marathon, the athlete announced he would attempt another sub-two-hour marathon (in 2017 he missed the two-hour target by 25 seconds during the Nike Breaking2 campaign).  This time it was the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. His objective is quite simple: run the marathon distance in less than 2 hours.

The event took place on October 12th in Vienna, followed on social media through hastaghs #NoHumanIsLimited and #INEOS159 and of course streamed live on YouTube. The athlete was joined by 41 pacers and thousands of specactors.

Eliud Kipchoge completed the challenge with an official time of 1:59:40.2, and became the first human to run a marathon distance in under two hours. Even though the impressive feat did not count as a new world record under IAAF rules (open event), the achievement was recognized by Guiness World Records with the following titles : 'Fastest marathon distance (male)' and 'First marathon distance under two hours.

The Shoe:

Kipchoge wore the latest Nike Alphafly running shoes during the race, a bespoke version of the famous Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% , considered as the fastest shoe on the planet by Men's journal in 2017, which were worn by his 41 pacers during the challenge.

The ZoomX models are ultra-lightweight and provide extreme energy return thanks impart to the innovative foam composed of Pebax® polymer.

Congratulations to Eliud Kipchoge for showing the world that "no human has limits!"
