| Minimum use of fossil fuels. Reduction of carbon emissions. Maximum performance. |
Most sports fans are aware of environmental issues. They are willing to invest in environmentally sounder products, albeit without jeopardizing the level of performance of their equipment.
Arkema is committing towards a responsible development (energy, waste and renewable materials) and has launched the first complete range of Engineering Thermoplastic Elastomers made from renewable resources, Pebax® Rnew.
This new Pebax® range will meet Arkema’s customers needs (in electronics, sports, automotive…) who are looking for high value products, while acting in an environmental friendly manner as the material they will use comes from vegetal resources. |
 |
| What does renewable means? |
Renewable resource is a natural organic resource. Its stock could be renewed in the same speed that it is consumed.
The use of plastics coming from renewable resources permits to:
• Preserve fossils resources • Reduce CO2 accumulation (Kyoto protocol) • Restore the balance of the CO2 cycle by the CO2 captation |
| What is Pebax® Rnew? |
For the past 60 years, Arkema has been the world leader in the Amino 11 chemistry, which is a unique chemical produced from a vegetal resource - castor oil - used to produce Rilsan® PA11. This natural vegetal oil comes from a non-GMO crop, non-edible and thus, is not competing with food production.

The Pebax® Rnew range leans on this particular chemistry.
This new range is now available from 20 up to 94% carbon atoms from renewable resources*.
* This calculation follows the guideline of the ASTM 6866 norm. The real amount of C from renewable sources can be measured by isotopic analysis of the 14C / 12C ratio and will have to be determined experimentally. This real value may be slightly different (probably by a few %) for the industrial grades.

| Pebax® Rnew naturally accommodates eco-design |
 |
Pebax® Rnew fits perfectly in the eco-conceptual design of products dedicated to answer to the environmental awareness of consumers.
The use of the Amino 11 chemistry in this new Pebax® formulation decreases the fossil energy requirement as well as the CO2 emission, which is the most important greenhouse gas. This makes Pebax® Rnew the ideal solution for environmentally-conscience consumers.
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) results of Pebax® Rnew allows to reductions of up to:
- 29% of fossil energy used
- 32% of equivalent CO2 emissions
Pebax® Rnew saves energy and costs by being the lightest TPE.
Pebax® Rnew also offers unbeatable resistance leading to aesthetic preservation and a longer product lifetime. |
|
| “A Pebax® which is more Pebax®” |
The Pebax® Rnew family made from renewable resources doesn’t compromise the outstanding properties of Pebax®:
- Lightness - Spring back, elasticity return - Impact resistance - Improved flex fatigue resistance

They have chosen to use Pebax® Rnew to design their sports equipments:
SCARPA, the Italian leading boots and shoes manufacturer specialized on the design of high-end ski boots, mountaineering shoes and climbing shoes wanted to prove that it is possible to act for environment while keeping the leadership on performances.
Arkema and Scarpa Research & Development teams have closely collaborated on the design of a ski boot more eco-aware: the Scarpa Hurricane. This prototype was presented at the ISPO 08 and it was the first biobased ski boots of the market.
MIZUNO, a leader in running footwear and apparel technology, has announced the use of a new thermoplastic
elastomer range for the Wave® Technology plates in four models of high performance running shoes set to debut in
2009.
The Pebax® Rnew will be utilized in both men’s and women’s models of the Mizuno Wave Rider 12, Wave
Inspire 5, Wave Creation 10, and Wave Nirvana 5.
